Senator Carr: The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question: On 05 April 2011 the Government announced a new immigration detention centre would be commissioned at the Defence facility at Pontville, 30 kilometres north of Hobart, Tasmania. The Minister contacted the Premier several days prior to the announcement and contacted the Mayor of Brighton the day before the announcement. The following key stakeholders were initially contacted by officers of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship on the same morning. Not all stakeholders were able to be reached at the first contact and follow up calls were required.
