Senator McGRATH (Queensland—Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister) (16:02): I seek leave to make a short statement. The PRESIDENT: Leave is granted for one minute. Senator McGRATH: Australia's model of integrated multiculturalism is entirely consistent with Australia's values. It reflects the reality of the make-up of Australian society and who we are: a nation that has grown and evolved over time. This great achievement is different from multiculturalism in other nations. We want newly arrived migrants to succeed and make the most of the opportunities that this great nation offers, just as previous generations have done. We also want to maintain social cohesion. With rights come responsibilities. Our integrated multicultural model means that a person who comes here shares our values and engages in our community. They must obey the law, participate and uphold our democratic principles. The PRESIDENT: The question is that motion No. 943 be agreed to.
