Senator HANSON-YOUNG (South Australia) (15:54): I move: That the Senate— (a) notes that: (i) on 27 March 2018, early childhood educators all across Australia will walk off the job, demanding the Government value their work and fund fair pay, (ii) early childhood educators provide a vital service in the development of young minds, and (iii) qualified early childhood educators can earn as little as $21 per hour, which is half the average wage; (b) recognises early childhood educators are not being paid a wage commensurate with the value of their social contribution; and (c) commends early childhood union, United Voice, for their leadership on this campaign, and encourages all childcare educators to participate in standing strong for fair pay.
