Ms GILLARD (Lalor—Prime Minister) (14:00): With the indulgence of the House, I would like to mark the award to Australia's newest Nobel laureate, Professor Brian Schmidt. I was able to meet with Professor Schmidt and convey our congratulations to him. Even though I had a direct discussion with him I am not going to pretend I am in a position to describe to the House the nature of his discovery in astrophysics. It is not very often that you are looking for words of congratulations for someone who has literally redefined our understanding of our universe, but that is exactly what Professor Schmidt has achieved. This is a fantastic personal award for him, but when I met with him the thing he wanted me to most understand was he viewed it as an award for the team of researchers that he worked with. He is very proud of the work that he does. He is very proud of the team of researchers that he works with. He has many friends at the Australian National University who were able to celebrate this award with him. Our congratulations go to him for a remarkable achievement.
