Senator DUNIAM (Tasmania—Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries and Assistant Minister for Regional Tourism) (17:14): I seek leave to make a short statement. The PRESIDENT: Leave is granted for one minute. Senator DUNIAM: Australia has one of the most generous humanitarian programs in the world. However, the continued success of this program is only made possible by maintaining an orderly and fair system. The Murugappan family's claims to engage Australia's protection obligations have been comprehensively assessed on a number of occasions by Home Affairs and various merits review bodies. These decisions have been appealed through the Federal Court and to the High Court. At no time has any member of the family in question been found to be owed protection. The government will never return to the failed policies of the opposition, which compromised our humanitarian program and resulted in more than 1,200 deaths at sea.
