Senator CONROY (Victoria—Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate) (13:08): The Railway Agreement (Western Australia) Amendment Bill 2014 relates to a loan from the Commonwealth to the Western Australia government made in 1961 to help Western Australia fund a standard gauge railway from Kalgoorlie to Perth. At the time, legislators did not make provision for early repayment, setting a deadline of 2041. This bill will correct that situation. The bill clears the way for the Western Australia government to repay the outstanding debt of about $1.6 million now, if it chooses to do so. Labor is happy to support the bill.
