Senator WRIGHT (South Australia) (15:37): I move: That the Senate— (a) notes that: (i) Tuesday, 26 June 2012 marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture and (ii) torture is a gross violation of human rights; (b) recognises that: (i) victims of torture require support and assistance as they rebuild their lives and undergo the rehabilitation necessary to resume as full a life as possible, and (ii) Australian, Mr David Hicks, experienced torture and cruel and degrading treatment during his detention in Guantanamo Bay; and (c) calls on the Government to conduct an independent inquiry into the former Australian Government's role in Mr Hicks' detention, treatment and unfair trial.
