The SPEAKER (14:15): I thank both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. If the House allows me, just very briefly, I worked very closely with John Fahey when I worked for federal Treasurer Peter Costello for those five years. In fact, after he'd had the operation and had the lung removed, Prime Minister, he still opened my first election campaign and, as a nervous candidate, I was walking far too quickly for him as he had those conversations that you alluded to! I did ask Peter Costello for a couple of remarks to read to you today. He sent this in: 'He was a good bloke and a good friend and an outstanding finance minister. He worked hard, he had great attention to detail and he had courage. He got things done, including Australia's biggest ever privatisation, concerning Telstra. John was great company and he could talk with a sparkle in his eye and a smile on his face.' As a mark of respect, in the memory of the Hon. John Joseph Fahey I ask all to please rise in their places. Honourable members having stood in their places— Debate adjourned.
