Mr SIMPKINS (Cowan) (13:46): On Monday I spoke about the issue of revoking citizenship for those Australian dual citizens who are involved in terrorist activities or fighting for or supporting extremist causes. Although I have received over 1,000 likes for that entry on Facebook, I would like to say that the support for my proposal goes way beyond just social media. Two Saturdays ago, on 5 July, at Murray Street Mall, the Iraqi community in Perth applauded very loudly when I talked about this way to combat extremism. I was very encouraged by that. When Sunnis, Shi'ites, Kurds and Christians gather together against extremists here and in Iraq it is very encouraging. It is time if not to follow then to really examine what Canada is doing at the moment. They are changing their citizenship laws. I believe that proposed bill is up to the third reading over in Canada. There has been some criticism of various aspects of that bill—the C-24 bill—but what has not been criticised is the terrorism and extremist causes revoking citizenship measure. So I advise that we move ahead with that.
