Senator CHISHOLM (Queensland) (16:43): I seek leave to make a short statement. The DEPUTY PRESIDENT: Leave is granted for one minute. Senator CHISHOLM: Labor understands that the Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery is a valuable and longstanding industry. The local regional economies depend heavily on these fisheries, and they generate valuable export earnings. This is why Labor will be supporting this motion and call on the minister to urgently undertake public consultation with the industry, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and the Department of the Environment and Energy to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry and on how the reduction of turtle bycatch can be achieved. Question agreed to.
