Senator ANNING (Queensland) (16:44): I move: That the Senate— (a) encourages the flying of the Australian flag by Australian citizens; (b) recognises the offence caused to the community when the Australian flag is disrespected; and (c) calls on the Federal Government to legislate to protect the Australian national flag by: (i) prohibiting the burning, or otherwise damaging or destroying, an Australian flag, and (ii) defacing, defiling, mutilating, trampling upon, or otherwise desecrating or dishonouring, an Australian flag.
