Senator McGRATH (Queensland—Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister) (15:37): I seek leave to make a short statement. The DEPUTY PRESIDENT: Leave is granted for one minute. Senator McGRATH: The government supports the intent of this motion to defer debate on Senator Hanson-Young's disallowance motion, which will provide additional time for the government to reach agreement with other parties on the delivery of the Basin Plan. The Northern Basin Review has been subject to extensive consultation and was supported by all Murray-Darling Basin jurisdictions in June 2017. The Northern Basin Review amendments would see environmental objectives achieved with a job-saving reduction in the water recovery target for the northern basin of 70 gigalitres. Disallowance of the Northern Basin Review amendment would put the entire Murray Darling Basin Plan at risk.
