Senator McGRATH (Queensland—Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister) (16:13): I seek leave to make a short statement. The DEPUTY PRESIDENT: Leave is granted for one minute. Senator McGRATH: Australians value freedom of speech and they recognise the enormous benefits multiculturalism has delivered to our country. We are a proud multicultural society. There is no place for hate speech in Australia. All Australians have the right to live free from fear of violence or racial discrimination. The government condemns racism and anybody who seeks to demonise someone because of their race. The government's reforms will strengthen Australia's antivilification laws, enhance freedom of speech and improve the complaint-handling processes of the Australian Human Rights Commission. Question agreed to.
