Senator LEYONHJELM (New South Wales) (14:44): Mr President, I ask a supplementary question, also on liberal values. Prior to the last election the Liberal Party promised to defend free speech by repealing section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. After the election the Liberal Party decided to retain 18C, and it remains a legal wrong to say something that someone is offended by on the basis of race. Given this, how can the public trust you to represent liberal values? The PRESIDENT: Senator Leyonhjelm, I know you prefaced your primary question by saying your questions were going to be about liberal values. I think you are really stretching the friendship in relation to supplementary questions. Secondly, I really fail to see how that fits within the minister's portfolio. I will invite the minister to answer any part of that if he wishes to.
