Mr GARRETT (Kingsford Smith—Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth) (14:09): I want to add my remarks to associate myself with those of the Leader of the Opposition and the Prime Minister. As Patron of the Rabaul and Montevideo Maru Society, I am absolutely thrilled that at last the nation will have an opportunity to commemorate the sacrifices made by some 800 soldiers, who were prisoners of war on this vessel, and some 200 civilians, including my grandfather, who perished at sea 70 years ago this Sunday. I also reflect on the fact that I inherited this position from a former Leader of the Opposition, Kim Beazley, who also had a relative who perished there. In closing, can I say that for those families and friends who perished at sea this will be an incredibly important day. They have waited many, many years for the appropriate recognition of the sacrifice of their family members and I very much look forward to representing you, Prime Minister, at that dedication.
